Captain's Duties

Last Update:

[ pdf version | back to Resources]

  1. Attend Captains Meetings in Pre-Season, Mid-Season and Post-Season.

  2. Be familiar with "Rules of Play" and the Bylaws.

  3. If match is away, make certain that all players have transportation, exact information regarding location, time of match, etc.

  4. At least 5 days before each match, home captain is to call opposing captain regarding

    1. Confirmation of date, time, location, and name of person to be contacted upon arrival.

    2. Any special rules to be observed (i.e. Parking, dress code, etc.). Note: Two weeks advance notice to opposing captain is needed to discuss any deviation from stated format and must be mutually agreeable.

  5. Hosting the match:

    1. Reserve required number of courts.

    2. Remind players they are to provide new balls.

    3. Appoint someone to bring refreshments.

    4. Greet teams, introduce players and assign courts.

    5. In bad weather, host captain determines playability of courts. She should try to notify opposing captain two (2) hours ahead of time when possible.
  6. If a match cannot be played and/or completed as scheduled, the match should be rescheduled as soon as possible. Matches must be continued on the new date with the same players and started at the exact point the match was discontinued. Original players must return to complete the match only if the first serve on the night of the rain-out was completed; if the match did not proceed any farther than warm-up, substitutes may be played.

    1. The captain should monitor all matches being played at a facility where the lights go out at a pre-determined time. If it appears that the match may run over, players should use/switch to "no-ad" scoring. If the lights do go out, the match should be treated as a rain-out.
    2. If a rain-out occurs and the affected captains agree they are unable to find time to make up the match, the captains may agree to accept the score of the match at the time of the rain-out (bearing in mind that partial scores may affect final standings).
      • In a rain-out (or lights-out) which is not made up, if the winner of a match cannot be determined (such as the score of 2-2, 30 all), the match should be treated as a split.

  7. Whenever possible, notify opposing captain in advance if a particular position must be defaulted (i.e. 3.5 singles player is ill and a replacement could not be arranged). This will help avoid inconveniencing other players.

  8. Captains will vote on a sportsmanship winner for their division. Therefore, fill out the sportsmanship rating section of a score sheet each week, whether you are a host or guest. This will help you determine sportmanship awards at the end of the season.

  9. The first of each month, mail original, fully completed, signed score sheets to your Assistant Tournament Director.
